Our first and last love is – self-love. ~Christian Bovee

As a mother of four children, I know what it feels like to want to do everything and anything I can to make them happy.  One life lesson that I have acquired over the past 15 years as a mother is that I have to love myself in the same way.

Here is an example that illustrates how I have applied this lesson in my life.

Yesterday, my 14 year old woke me up at 5 AM to take him to football conditioning practice at the high school in preparation for football season next year.  As much as I don’t like getting up that early in the morning, I obliged without complaint.

This morning I awoke at 6 AM and the first thought that came to mind was to go back to sleep.  My second thought was to go to the gym and get my cardio session in.  I decided that I would go workout this morning and give myself the same level of love and commitment that I give to my children.

It is so easy for mothers to neglect themselves for others, especially their children.  I used to do it a lot and still have to remind myself that I am my first priority and to take care of myself.  I know that when I am well, my children and those that I interact with benefit tremendously.

In what ways do you demonstrate self love in your life?
